Jolyon Petch – Taking Back House!
Written by Ap Stooker on October 4, 2017
1. How did you get started in the music business?
“I used to play the drums in a 3 piece rock band for 5 years and when we broke up a friend of mine was DJ’ing at some underage parties. He gave me my first break with a few shows. From there I started getting more gigs in my home country of New Zealand.”
2. Who or what has had the most influence on your work?
“When I started out, acts like Basement Jaxx, Chemical Brothers, Prodigy were all a big part of my dance music influences. But it was DJ’s like Pete Tong, Judge Jules and Boy George mixing the first Ministry of Sound CD compilations who really helped shape my DJ’ing back in the day.”
3. How has technology changed your work within the last 5 to 10 years?
“Obviously, turntables were made redundant with the evolution of the CDJ. Moving the format from Vinyl, CD, Laptops and now USB. Now I think you can even plug in your iPhone and DJ off that. Be interesting to see where it all goes in the next 10 years. I started on Vinyl, moved to CD’s, went to Serato for easy search functionality and now onto USB.”
4. In what direction do you see house music and electronic dance music moving?
“I’m glad to see the EDM scene imploding and it returning to the roots of House music. Look at Beatport at the moment, I think there’s only 1 EDM song in the top ten and the rest are House, Deep House & Techno tracks. I’m happy to see house stronger than ever. You can already see from this shift in music, these Edm stars are slowing down their productions and becoming House DJ’s/Producers.”
5. What do you want our listeners and your fans to know about what is coming up for the next 6 months for you?
“I have been busy working in the studio for the last few months crafting some new singles with Artists like Kid Créme, Ron Carroll, Sian Evans, Andy Van (Madison Ave), Komes, Mind Electric, DAZZ, Andy Murphy and of course my home girl Terri B. I currently have my new original single ‘Boy in the picture’ out on Virgin EMI, it’s a collaboration with Kid Créme and Sian Evans (Kosheen) and we have our brand new music video which was produced and filmed in South Africa. It’s a charming little story of a boy day dreaming about teddy bears. Check it out here: http://bit.ly/kidjolyon”
“My new single ‘Otherside’ has just debuted in Australia at #10 on the club charts, so i’m hoping we can hit top 5 over the next few weeks. Plus my record labels Club Luxury & House Life Records are starting to churn out some more great productions from our upcoming artists Elektrik Disko, MDNITE, Cosmonov, Paradiso & more.”
